For my t-shirt design, I decided to create a butterfly since they're beautiful insects, and it would be easy to add a lot of detail to the final print. I started out by looking up outlines of butterflies, and then combined several different layouts together to make my own pattern/shapes on the wings. I then transferred the sketch on to the sticker paper, and used an X-ACTO knife to cut out the parts that were to be filled with ink in the end. This part was the most challenging for me personally, because I had lots of small circular shapes that the knife couldn't get around easily, which would create a "jagged" look on some of my edges. Also in this project, it was difficult to distinguish what shapes I was supposed to be cutting out, since in the last project of block printing, the pieces that would be creating the actual marks was reversed. Once my stencil was created for my butterfly, I attached it to a silk screen and made two different prints, one in white and the other in black. I first did black because I liked the intense contrast between the fabric and the print, but then decided to also make a white one to be a more muted design. I love how both of them came out, and will be using them in my room as decoration!
